Workshop “Initiatives of grassroots democracy and public participation in the policy process in the Central Region of Vietnam” at NAPA Campus in Hue

On February 28th 2017, National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) Central Region Campus and University of Canberra, Australia organized the workshop “Initiatives of grassroots democracy and public participation in the policy process in the Central Region of Vietnam”.

Presented at the workshop were leaders of Thua Thien Hue province, leader of NAPA, representatives of University of Canberra, NAPA staff and faculty as well as representatives from Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua ThienHue, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh provinces and Da Nang city.

Chaired the meeting were Mr Dinh Khac Dinh – Vice Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Province, Dr. Le NhuThanh, NAPA Permanent Vice President, Professor Mark Evans, Director of Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis, University of Canberra, Australia.

The workshop gathered more than 50  articles by scholars, lecturers, researchers, managers and practitioners. The articles were diverse in content, rich in expertise, presenting the views and opinions on theoretical and practical issues of grassroots democracy initiatives and participation of citizens in the policy process in Vietnam especially the Central Region.

Dr. Le NhuThanh, NAPA Permanent Vice President affirmed that the workshop is an open forum for researchers and public managers to share knowledge as well as propose recommendations, ideas in order to promote effective and efficient public governance. The recommendations and suggestions will provide a basis to build a State of the people, by the people, for the people in the context of international and regional integration; involve citizens in public governance in order to develop quality public policy.

The presentations at the workshop were grouped into two panels which are “Democratic Initiatives” and “Public Participation in the public policy process”. They showed different viewpoints of democracy and participation at various levels, from macro to micro levels, from local, regional to national level.

At the end of the workshop, the workshop organizers appreciated the presentations and affirmed that they have shown multiple perspectives as well as in-depth analysis related to the workshop topic. The contribution of participants will provide important advice to the local authorities of the Central Region to increase integrity, transparency and accountability of governance in the context of international integration in Vietnam.
