Seminar: Improving research skills for English language majors at the National Academy of Public Administration

To motivate and help students in accessing effective research methods and thinking, on May 22, 2024, at NAPA at 36 Xuan La, Faculty of Foreign Language and Information Technology Studies organized a Seminar titled ” Improving research skills for English language majors at the National Academy of Public Administration”, attracting over 200 students.

Prof. Dr. Luong Thanh Cuong, NAPA Vice President; Dr. Pham Quang Quyen, Head of Library, Center for Technology and Library; Mr. Le Van Khai, Head of Studies and Research Management Division, Institute of Administrative Studies; Dr. Nguyen Van Luong, former Director General of the Ministerial Department of Training, Senior Lecturer of Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics; Dr. Ha Van Hau, Vice Dean, Faculty of Publishing, Academy of Journalism and Communication; Ms. Tran Thi Minh Hieu, Deputy Head, Editorial Division, Foreign Television Channel, News Television Center, Vietnam News Agency, representative of IELTS 9.0 Philippines in Viet Nam.

On the side of the Faculty of Foreign Language and Information Technology Studies, there were Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hoa – Vice Dean; Dr. Giap Thi Yen, Vice Dean; Dr. Dinh Thi Huong, Head of Division of Foreign Languages for Special Purposes and all lecturers and students of the Faculty.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Thanh Cuong began the Seminar by sharing his insights on foreign language acquisition and expressed hope for receiving academic research topics from English language majors in the upcoming years. He also mentioned the Academy’s plans to create mechanisms for research projects written in foreign languages.

Dr. Pham Quang Quyen discussed how to utilize foreign resources on the Academy’s digital library platform and the Academy’s procedures for submitting academic research topics, as well as how to insert appropriate references to use with anti-plagiarism software.

In his presentation, Dr. Nguyen Van Luong shared strategies for selecting academic research ideas. Dr. Ha Van Hau emphasized that research topics should be scientific, novel, feasible, and applicable, addressing the actual needs of society and contributing to professional development.

In addition, Ms. Tran Thi Minh Hieu provided tips on effective English learning and gave valuable advice on language exploration and research to facilitate English language majors in conducting academic research.

 The Seminar highlighted the importance and benefits of academic research, encouraging students to participate more actively. Faculty members and guest speakers also outlined potential research areas for English language majors.

Students engaged in discussions about the best time during their undergraduate course to conduct research, common challenges, frequent mistakes, and funding for research projects. These inquiries were thoroughly addressed by the delegates.

The Seminar equipped students with basic knowledge of academic research associated with their English language major. Students also expressed a desire for more in-depth programs from the Academy and the Faculty, aiming to promote the research culture among students in the Faculty and the Academy as a whole.
