Vietnam fulfills its noble, glorious, and pure international obligations

Speaking at the anniversary held in Tbong Khmum province, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that the celebration of June 20, 1977 is of great significance to mark the 45th anniversary of the journey to overthrow the Pol Pot genocidal regime of Prime Minister Hun Sen, bringing Cambodia back to life, showing the special cooperation and solidarity between the two countries. This is even more meaningful when taking place in the context that the two countries are celebrating 55 years of establishing diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967 – June 24, 2022).

Condemning the genocide that the Cambodian people suffered and the brutal crimes committed by the Pol Pot clique against the Vietnamese people, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam has shared difficulties and wholeheartedly help to build up forces for the Cambodian revolution; and at the same time support and coordinate with Cambodian rebel forces to fight against the reactionary Pol Pot group, liberate the nation from genocide, restore and rebuild the country.

In 1989, according to the agreement between the two nations, Viet Nam withdrew all its volunteer troops in pride and glory, with the nostalgia and affection of the Cambodian people, fulfilling the noble, glorious, pure, and rare international obligations in history of international relations.

According to the Prime Minister, the 45th anniversary of the “Journey towards the overthrow of Pol Pot genocidal regime” not only reminds us of the historical milestone of the beginning of the fight for conscience and human dignity, the reason for the overthrow of the brutal genocidal regime but also shows vivid evidence of the friendship, solidarity, fidelity, and ironclad relationship between the two peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Without the overthrow of the genocidal regime of Pol Pot, Cambodia would not be where it is today

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s speech clearly summed up the journey of overthrowing the Pol Pot genocidal regime and reviving the country of Cambodian people as well as the historical relationship between the two countries.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said at that time he had four options: The first one was to make use of the forces he was commanding for armed insurrection, but if he had chosen this option, the forces he commanded would have soon been destroyed. The second option is to go to Vietnam; the third option is to do nothing, letting the Pol Pot genocidal regime continue to commit crimes and the fourth option is to commit suicide.

Prime Minister Hun Sen once recounted that at that time “there was nothing left but waiting for death”.

During that difficult time, Prime Minister Hun Sen, along with some patriotic cadres of Cambodia, decided to go to Vietnam to express the will of the Cambodian people to receive help from Vietnam. As he once said, there was no other way based on the domestic and international political situation at that time.

Prime Minister Hun Sen emphasized that history has proven that without “The journey of the overthrow the genocidal Pol Pot regime” that began on June 20, 1977 and subsequent events, Cambodia would not be where it is today. He once again affirmed that Vietnam’s actions were absolutely right, Vietnamese volunteer soldiers have joined Cambodia to liberate the nation, saving the Cambodian people from the Pol Pot genocidal regime, reviving and developing the country.

The two Prime Ministers affirmed that appreciate the relationship of “good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability”, tightening and deepening the precious “forever green, eternally sustainable” traditional friendship and solidarity between the two peoples.

Earlier on the same day, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Prime Minister Hun Sen and a high-ranking Cambodian government delegation to Binh Phuoc province to visit some relics related to the event on June 20, 1977.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Prime Minister Hun Sen planted a tree together at the X16 historical site, one of the landmarks that Prime Minister Hun Sen once said was “the most memorable in his life and contributes to changing Cambodia later on”.
