Workshop “Integrated coastal management towards sustainable development”

On November 29th, 2016, National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) co-organized the workshop “Integrated Costal Management toward Sustainable Development”. Presented at the workshop were Mr. Marvin Müller – specialized lecturer, DAAD in Hanoi; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Chu Hoi – President of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Ngoc Hai – Director of the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health, Ministry of H; Mr. Ho Huy Thanh – Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and in Ha Tinh Province, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Chau Thu – Vietnam National University of Agriculture; NAPA staff and lecturers; and alumni from Germany.

Giving a speech at the workshop, Mr. Pham Quynh Hoa – General Director of the International Cooperation Department, NAPA addressed the importance of integrated coastal management in sustainable development for Vietnam, a country of a long coastline with coastal populated and economic areas and rich in marine resources. She emphasized that integrated coastal management requires raising awareness and taking action which takes a long process,  enhancing the role of State’s management. Specific solutions should be set out as an urgent request to promote integrated coastal management for sustainable development of sea economy and guarantee social security associated with environmental protection For that reason, the support of the DAAD for Faculty of State Management on Urban and Rural Development in organizing the workshop “Integrated coastal management towards sustainable development” was a practical support and meaningful.

On behalf of DAAD, Mr. Marvin Miller appreciated cooperation activities and academic exchange from 2010 between DAAD and NAPA. Both sides collaborated in organizing many scientific workshops such as “State management on Resources and Environment: theory and practice” in 2014, the workshop “State management on immigration and climate change: status and solutions” in 2015. He believed that the workshop is a solid continuation of effective cooperation between the two sides as well as contributing to the development of high-quality leadership, promoting innovation and development process of each country. Mr. Miller also spent time  introducing DAAD as well as academic exchange programs between German universities and international universities with DAAD support.

At the workshop, after presentations “Integrated coastal management in the context of globalization” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Chu Hui; “Geographical division for integrated use  – a solution for sustainable development of  coastal resources in Ha Tinh ” by Mr. Ho Huy Thanh, participants discussed the theoretical and practical issues of integrated coastal management in Vietnam nowadays.

At the end of workshop, Dr. Nguyen Viet Hung, Deputy Director of the Development and Research Center of Settlement and Environment, Faculty of State Management on Urban and Rural Development, emphasized that the workshop is an opportunity for NAPA staff and lecturers to discuss with professionals in the field of natural resources and environment which will strengthen the capability of teaching and consultancy on state management of sea and islands.

The ideas and opinions at the workshop would become precious inputs for NAPA to develop training curricula and materials of environmental risk management as well as research projects concerning marine management and livelihood. The workshops also contributed to promoting the cooperation, academic exchange and sharing management experience between NAPA and Germany universities which provide a basis for proposals for cooperation with coastal European countries.
